How often do you visit?:... = 2 TIME
How did you find us?:... = TEACHER MR OLSON
Questions, comments or feedback:... = WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WITH NEWTON AND
COPERNICUS?

What happens next with Newton and Copernicus is rather unpredictable. I do hope to have them
attempt collecting money out of the fountain, but sometimes the story writes itself in directions I
had never imagined.  Check back and see. Thanks for stopping by.

How often do you visit?:... = every day, update, please
How did you find us?:... = accident
Questions, comments or feedback:... = Love the strip. How about having
them order that pizza? Enjoyed the metric measure and speed info, very
cute. Science teachers look for cute ways to present this type of
information. Aim for us at least part of the time, or put out a supplemental
booklet presenting science facts with your characters. Teacher book
stores would welcome this. The characters are very cute. My favorite is
the girl that you have hardly been showing lately, let's get more of her.
Maybe she could show up with a troop of young female troops who are
lost "girl scout" types. She can't abandon them...
Well, what ever you do, I will be sure I'll love it.

Vivian, thanks for the note. My master's research project (which has me on hold for the next few
weeks,) is an evaluation of a curriculum I developed with the cartoon strip and it's impact on science
literacy. If you contact me through the email link on the home page, I can let you know when the
edited curriculum is available in a published format. It's encouraging to know a fellow teacher finds it
of value. The data so far has been encouraging. Thanks again, J. Olson.

Your name = Lisanne
City, State, or Country = the netherlands
How often do you visit? = often
Subject: = Newton's theory
Questions, comments, or feedback: = How is it possible that the theory
of Newton can explain the movements in the model of Copernicus but not
of Ptolemaeus? tnx

Lisanne; It was Kepler, working with Tycho Brahe's data on planetary movement that finally resolved
planetary movement in Copernicus' model. He discovered that the planets orbits were elliptical, which
explained how Mars would sometime have an apparent retrograde motion in its orbit. He also concluded
that the planets speed up as they are nearer the sun in their orbit and slow down as they get
farther away. (an effect of the sun's gravity.) He also found that there is a relationship between a
planets orbital speed and its average distance from the sun.
Newton's law of Universal Gravitation came along and explained/supported Kepler's "laws" of planetary
motion. Ptolemy's model, while it nearly worked and was remarkable for its time, had a problem with
the model of circles on circles.  Since there was no central mass(therefor no gravity) to hold a planet
in a circular path as it traveled on its larger orbit, Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation could not
be applied to Ptolemy's theory. That is how I see it. I'm sure an astronomer or astrophysicist would
find my explanation a bit under informed.  Hope this helps some. J. Olson

Questions, comments, or feedback: i just would like to know how many rats you have had ever,   if
you can count, and which one was the hardest to let go . i know that
these are difficult questions , but everybody needs to be asked them
once in a while , its ok to remember sometimes, but its never ok to try
to forget ,
sincerely , Jessica

Interesting question, Jessica.  As a kid I raised guinea pigs (over 100 in a period of 4 years).  The
hardest of these to lose were Buck and Charlotte, the original pair.

As for rats, I have only actually owned one.  Her name was Saran Rat (named by a student) and she
was the class mascot in an 8th grade science class I taught over twenty years ago.  Saran Rat
became ill and lost her ability to walk normally, and had to be humanely euthanized.  Thanks for
asking.
Sincerely, J. C. Olson
